Sexual Addictions/Compulsions

Sex addictions are developing in younger aged youth every year. If unhealthy sexual behavior or compulsions are not addressed during the early stages of development, the problem can become pervasive, addicting and even more difficult to overcome later in life. Sex addiction does not mean that a person is addicted to sex. Sex addiction revolves around the process of arousal as a way of coping and soothing inner turmoil and which leads to compulsive and habit-forming sexual acts. In severe cases, untreated sex addictions can lead to criminal acts and consequences. The most common forms of sex addiction in youth today include pornography, masturbation, and sexting. Many of these addictions start out innocently as youth continue their development and go through stages of curiosity and experimentation. One of the most interesting issues surrounding sex addiction is that despite the pervasive presence that sex has in our culture, sex continues to be a taboo topic in many homes and other areas of society. Because of this, many families and youth feel shame even discussing sex, let alone their problems with sexual behavior and so the behavior becomes worse. Additionally, this taboo tendency can be an influence in the creation and maintenance of sex abuse among family members or acquaintances, causing additional trauma and a fixation on sexual things. Like other addictions, there is help for breaking out of sexual addictions, it just takes time and commitment.  We provide a variety of treatment options that may fit your needs and it all starts with evidenced-based assessment.  If you are LDS, we also provide a faith based treatment approach called Sons of Helaman.
